September Meeting Recap

Dr. Robert Thomas, Endocrinologist from UCSD, shared updates on his ongoing kidney research and his new research on the impact of sleep quality by low blood sugars before bed and during sleep. His new ongoing study tracks the sleep issues of T1D patients. In the study, participants wear a smart watch combined with a CGM to track sleep quality related to low blood sugars. Over 30% of people withT1D have sleep apnea; many are undiagnosed. Furthermore, weight isn’t the only cause of sleep apnea.

Dr. Thomas found that participants experiencing low blood sugars during sleep have disrupted sleep and are unable to achieve deep sleep during the rest of the night. This situation causes daytime fatigue and prevents hormone production during sleep. To avoid this problem, you should develop good sleep habits. Start with a consistent bedtime, use a sensor to help reduce nighttime lows, and, if necessary, request a sleep study. Your doctor can prescribe GLP1 for diabetics with sleep apnea regardless of their BMI.

To sign up for studies, go to https://sdinsulinpumpers.org/san-diego-research-studies/ and scroll down to UCSD Clinical Diabetes Research Group. The study participants must wear a watch for three months.

UCSD Patient Innovator Program Seeking Input

Heidi Rataj, MA, Program Director, Design & Strategy, of the Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego Health invites patients and caregivers to join their new JCHI Patient Innovators community. As a Patient Innovator, you’ll have the opportunity to share your experiences, provide feedback on new digital health tools and care services, and help shape the future of healthcare.

Your perspective matters. By partnering with patients and caregivers from the beginning, we can create solutions that are easier to use, more responsive to real needs, and more meaningful in everyday life.

No special expertise is required—just your willingness to share your experiences and ideas. Whether you’ve navigated a chronic condition, cared for a loved one, or interacted with the healthcare system in any way, your voice can help improve care for others.

Join us in designing healthcare that is more human, accessible, and centered on the people it serves; the best healthcare innovations are built with patients, not just for them.

If you or anyone you know that has had a recent surgery at UCSD Health (ortho, gastro, surgical oncology) that Heidi could interview about their surgical process journey such as preparation, day-of, and post procedure, Heidi would LOVE to hear from them!

As a volunteer Patient Innovator, you can share your experiences, provide feedback on new digital health tools and care services, and help shape the future of healthcare. You can participate in person or virtually.

Topics in the coming months include hospital room and display placement, interpreter services, patient entertainment systems, noise cancellation systems, and lighting elements.

Device Adhesives Input Needed

Joanne Milo reports: “I had a great discussion with a 3M Corporation startup healthcare company working in the medical adhesive space. After I shared my comments about the issues with current devices and skin, particularly with aging and overused skin, they asked an interesting question: ‘What would you like us to design or make? Can you define or create a best-case solution to keep your devices attached? What are your thoughts?’ ”

3M is asking and listening! Please email Joanne Milo with your input on this issue: joanne@thesavvydiabetic.com

T1D meetings are for adults living with Type 1 diabetes. Our meetings are relaxed, welcoming, and genuinely uplifting – the kind where conversations flow easily, laughter comes quickly, and you leave feeling lighter than when you arrived. No agenda. No presentations. Just real connection with people who truly understand life with T1D. Check out grownupt1ds.org for events in Southern California, Denver, and Boston.

Save the date! We’ll celebrate World Diabetes Day on Saturday, November 14, at 2:00 PM, at Brewery X in Anaheim in their outdoor area. Wear blue and look for the blue balloons to find us!

Grownup T1Ds chapters in other cities around the country will also gather for World Diabetes Day, so we’re excited to celebrate together across the US!
